Baptism: 16 July 1856, in Woolpit, Suffolk, England. William James is recorded as the son of George Doel, a labourer of Woolpit and Harriet, late Clark.

Father: George Doel

Mother: Harriet (Clarke) Doel

Married:
Susannah Orris on 13 October 1876, in Drinkstone, Suffolk, England. The marriage was witnessed by Thomas Howlet and Ellen Revens. William is recorded as aged 20, a labourer of Drinkstone, the son of George Doel, a carpenter. Susannah is recorded as aged 19, a spinster of Drinkstone, the daughter of William Orris, a labourer. Susannah was born in 1857, in Drinkstone, Suffolk.

The baptism records of Susannah's children Arthur and Ernest, as transcribed by John Nichols, show the children's mother as Susannah late Napthine (or Napthin), while the records for William, Maude and Bertie show Susannah late Orris. This is an odd data inconsistancy - there are no other William Doel's about, and the Arthur and Ernest's baptism line up with the dates expected from their census records, so I am sure these are the right baptisms, and Susannah is for some reason sometimes referred to as Napthine. She is shown as a spinster in her marriage record, so it is not as simple as parish clerks sometimes using her maiden name and sometimes the name of her first husband, but I cannot figure out the actual circumstance.
